FOOD CONTACT

Food-Grade Silicone Sheet

VMQ silicone sheet manufactured with ingredients approved for food contact, post-cured in an oven to eliminate residual volatiles. Available in peroxide cure (general food use) and platinum cure (pharmaceutical, laboratory, GMP environments where minimal by-product generation is required). From sheet rolls for the maintenance engineer to cut gaskets on site, to die-cut parts to drawing for machinery manufacturers.

Silicone is the reference elastomer for food contact due to its chemical inertness, absence of taste and odour, resistance to extreme temperatures and ease of cleaning. But not all silicone on the market complies with food-contact regulations. For a silicone sheet to be suitable, the raw materials in the compound must be approved by the regulatory authorities — FDA in the United States, BfR in Germany, EC 1935/2004 in Europe — and the manufacturing process must include post-curing at high temperature to eliminate the low-molecular-weight volatiles generated during vulcanisation.

We manufacture food-grade silicone sheets in two cure systems. Peroxide cure is the food-industry standard: good mechanical properties, a wide range of hardnesses (30 to 80 Shore A) and colours, optimised cost. Platinum cure offers a higher-purity material with minimal by-product generation — it is the choice for pharmaceutical, laboratory, medical device and GMP applications where biocompatibility and material inertness are critical requirements.

Available in roll form (standard width 1,000 mm, other widths to order) or as custom-cut and die-cut parts. Each batch is supplied with a certificate of conformity, raw material traceability and extraction/migration test results per the applicable standard.

Peroxide or platinum? How to choose the right cure system

The difference is not one of quality — both systems produce silicone that is safe for food contact. The difference is one of residual purity. Peroxide-cured silicone generates curing by-products (organic acids) that are eliminated by post-curing, but traces may remain. For general food use (equipment gaskets, work surfaces, lid seals) it is perfectly adequate. Platinum-cured silicone generates inert by-products (water and alcohol) and the reaction is more complete, leaving a purer material. It is the choice when the plant protocol or regulations demand minimal material-product interaction: pharmaceutical, production of flavour-sensitive beverages (wine, craft beer, spirits), laboratory, baby food, cosmetics.

Colours and formats

The right sheet for every production environment

Red — the universal standard

Red — the universal standard

Red is the most widespread colour in the industry for general-use food-grade silicone. Its high visibility enables rapid identification of gaskets and seals on stainless-steel equipment. Available in peroxide and platinum cure, across the full range of hardnesses and thicknesses.

White — pharmaceutical and cosmetic

White — pharmaceutical and cosmetic

White colour, clean appearance, ideal for environments where material aesthetics matter (pharmaceutical, cosmetic, baby food) or where visual verification of surface cleanliness is required. Common in plants with chromatic cleaning protocols.

Blue — food-industry identification

Blue — food-industry identification

Blue is the international food-industry standard for components that must not be confused with food product (blue does not exist in nature as a food colour). It facilitates visual detection of fragments. It is the same colour used in the metal-detectable sheet.

Translucent — visual inspection of the seal

Translucent — visual inspection of the seal

Translucent/semi-transparent silicone that allows visual verification of the condition of a joint or surface without removing the gasket. Useful in applications where confirmation that no residue has accumulated between the gasket and the flange is needed.

Black — industrial and multi-purpose

Black — industrial and multi-purpose

Black silicone, the most visually discreet. Suitable for food applications where colour has no safety function and for general industrial use with food-grade certification as a precaution.

RAL colours to order

For plants with colour-coded production zones or for machinery manufacturers needing a corporate colour, we manufacture food-grade sheet in any RAL colour. The colorant is selected to maintain FDA/EC 1935/2004 compliance — not all pigments are suitable.

Thicknesses and hardnesses

Complete range for every sealing need

The combination of hardness + thickness determines gasket behaviour. Low hardness (30–40 ShA) for low-force seals and irregular surfaces. Medium hardness (50–60 ShA) for flange gaskets and standard equipment seals. High hardness (70–80 ShA) for parts under pressure or mechanical stress.

Soft — 30 to 40 Shore A

30 · 40 Shore A

Very flexible silicone, high deformability. Conforms to irregular or non-flat surfaces. Ideal for low-pressure seals where closure force is limited. Caution: at these hardnesses the material is more sensitive to tearing — do not use in applications with shear.

Application: Low-pressure lid gaskets, seals on interfaces with wide tolerances, anti-slip equipment bases.
Tensile (MPa min)
4–6.5
Elongation (% min)
350–500
Tear (kN/m min)
10–17

Availability: Peroxide and platinum. Thicknesses 0.5 to 12 mm.

Medium — 50 to 60 Shore A

50 · 60 Shore A

The most versatile range. Balance between flexibility and mechanical resistance. 60 Shore A is the industry standard for food-grade flat gaskets. Good elastic recovery, good tear resistance, suitable for most static sealing applications.

Application: Flange gaskets, lid seals, washers, inspection gaskets, work surface linings.
Tensile (MPa min)
7.5–8
Elongation (% min)
300–400
Tear (kN/m min)
17–20

Availability: Peroxide and platinum. Thicknesses 0.5 to 12 mm. 60 ShA red in stock.

Hard — 70 to 80 Shore A

70 · 80 Shore A

Rigid silicone with high resistance to pressure and cold flow. For applications where the gasket works under significant mechanical load or where dimensional stability under constant pressure is needed. Lower adaptability to irregularities — requires machined sealing surfaces.

Application: Gaskets under pressure (autoclaves, reactors), mechanical support parts, components under permanent static load.
Tensile (MPa min)
7.5–9.5
Elongation (% min)
100–300
Tear (kN/m min)
15–23

Availability: Peroxide and platinum. Thicknesses 0.5 to 10 mm.

Standard thicknesses: 0.5 · 0.8 · 1 · 1.5 · 2 · 3 · 4 · 5 · 6 · 8 · 10 · 12 mm. Standard roll width 1,000 mm. Other widths and intermediate thicknesses to order. Thickness tolerance per ISO 3302 Class 3.

The curing reaction generates acidic by-products that are eliminated by post-curing in an oven. Reliable, economical and proven over decades of industrial use.

Ideal for

General food industry, beverages, dairy, meat, industrial bakery, confectionery, canning, food packaging.
